Eager to erase the memory of their humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Real Valladolid last time out, Celta were immediately on the front foot. They had the ball in the net inside 15 minutes, but Jørgen Strand Larsen’s tap-in was ruled offside following some remarkable teamwork. Breathing a huge sigh of relief, the visitors continued to function largely as spectators in the match, relying on their stern five-man defence to keep Celta at bay.
Both sides suffered injury setbacks to their respective fullbacks right after the half-hour mark, with Fabrizio Angileri following Hugo Mallo off the pitch, as they then looked to exploit each other on the wings. However, it was from a freekick that Getafe drew first blood on the stroke of HT, thanks to Ünal’s thunderbolt from almost 30 yards that flew into the left corner.
Eduardo Coudet’s men came agonisingly close to drawing level after the restart through Gabriel Veiga, as the young Spaniard let fly from range towards the bottom corner, only to see his shot amazingly sved away by David Soria. Just like the first period, the Azulones were largely restricted to their own half as the final minutes dawned, but they appeared unfazed and more than happy to sit back and soak up the pressure despite their slender lead.
Just as all hope appeared lost, Coudet’s men struck a crucial equaliser. Iago Aspas’ brilliant cross was powerfully headed home by Aidoo, leaving Getafe without a win in five La Liga matches and just a point clear of the drop zone.
