Brigham Young University quarterback Jake Retzlaff announced on Friday that he is withdrawing from the school's football program after recently being accused of sexual assault and violating the school's honour code that forbids premarital sex.

After talking with his teammates and coaches around the end of June prior to the ultimate decision, Retzlaff will now simply leave the school and enroll elsewhere rather than going through the process of the infamous transfer portal.

"We are grateful for the time Jake Retzlaff has spent at BYU," said the school's athletic program. "As he moves forward, BYU Athletics understands and respects Jake's decision to withdraw from BYU, and we wish him all the best as he enters the next phase of his career."

"We love Jake Retzlaff and appreciate all that he's done for our program," said head coach Kalani Sitake. "(But) it would be inappropriate for me to make a statement in his situation."

According to the original lawsuit, the now former BYU quarterback was accused of sexually assaulting a girl in November 2023 in his home in Provo, Utah. The situation was described as them kissing during a movie, her refusing to go any further, with Retzlaff finding a condom and not taking no for an answer.

The lawsuit was originally dismissed on June 30th, but Retzlaff still received a seven-game suspension for violating the school's honour code.

Retzlaff became the starting QB for BYU this past season, leading them to an 11-2 record - eventually taking down Colorado in the Alamo Bowl, winning 36-14 - finishing with 2,947 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
