Oklahoma State announced on Tuesday that they fired football head coach Mike Gundy after 21 seasons.

The team had a 1-2 start to the season, with losses to No. 9 Oregon (69-3) and then Tulsa (19-12) this past week. Gundy only had two losing seasons during his entire tenure as head coach at Oklahoma State - his first season and his last one.

He has spent 35 of his 58 years at the university, serving as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.

Gundy was set to make $6.25 million this season and will now be owed a total of $15 million.

"Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy's leadership," said OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg. "I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football."

"College football has changed drastically in the last few years, and the investment needed to compete at the highest level has never been more important," said Weiberg. "As we search for the next head coach of Cowboy Football, we are looking for someone who can lead our program in this new era. It is also important that we continue to support our student-athletes, our staff, and our university through the season, and I hope that our fans continue to show that support in Boone Pickens Stadium this fall.

Gundy posted a 170-90 record through 21 seasons with 12 bowl wins. Under Gundy, OSU finished in the AP Top 25 for 17 consecutive seasons (2008-2024) and made 18 straight bowl appearances from 2006 to 2023.

The three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year led the Cowboys to five top 15 finishes, eight 10-win seasons, and two 12-win seasons. His 18-straight winning seasons are tied for the ninth-most in Division I football history.

And, 18 years ago, the legendary coach gave us one of the most iconic press conference moments in football history.
