Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Connelly Early tied the franchise record with the most strikeouts (11) by a rookie in their debut start during Tuesday night's game against the Athletics.

Early's 11 K's tied Don Aase's back in 1977. The rookie finished his debut going five innings, giving up just five hits and a single walk.

The 23-year-old southpaw is the Red Sox's No. 6 overall prospect (#4 pitcher) and received the call-up after putting up stellar numbers in the minors this season.

In Double-A, Early went 7-2 with a 2.51 earned run average across 71.2 innings in 15 games (12 starts). He gave up 52 hits while striking out 96 and walking 29. Batter hit .202 against Early before he was called up to Triple-A - where he thrived even more.

During his six games in Triple-A, opponents hit just .184 against Early. He struck out 36 batters in 28.2 innings while giving up 19 hits and 11 walks, posting a 2.83 ERA.

Now, he'll be aiding a Red Sox team that's 3.5 games back of first place in the American League East division with an 80-65 record. They currently hold the second Wild Spot, just under their dreaded rivals in the New York Yankees (80-64), with just 17 games left in the regular season.
