A late Leroy Sane goal saved Bayern Munich from a rare home loss as they drew 1-1 with a valiant Borussia Monchengladbach, who had led for much of the game thanks to a Marcus Thuram effort

Bayern came out of the blocks fast and Dayot Upamecano’s powerful header forced Yann Sommer into a save inside a minute.

The Bavarians nearly took the lead from a Joshua Kimmich free-kick as he swung his cross across the face of goal but Sadio Mané and Thomas Muller failed to connect and the ball went narrowly wide.

Kingsley Coman continued to probe at the Gladbach defence, beating three players before firing a shot narrowly over the crossbar. Bayern continued to dominate and Sane sent an audacious volley over the crossbar, before being denied by an excellent last-ditch tackle from Ko Itakura.

The hosts thought they’d taken the lead when a fantastic cross from Müller was poked home by Mane at the back post, but it was ruled offside.

The Foals then took the lead against the run of play thanks to a ruthless counterattack just before the break, which saw Thuram charge through on goal and slot the ball beyond Manuel Neuer.

Die Roten began the second half with the same attitude displayed in the first, as Coman sent a cross into the box but Muller couldn't direct his header goalwards.

Bayern couldn't believe they hadn't found an equaliser after Müller squared the ball to Mane only for Sommer to pull off a wonderful double save. Sommer came to Monchengladbach’s rescue again shortly after as Sane raced through one-on-one, and the Swiss stopper continued his heroics as the half went on, Benjamin Pavard being the next to be denied after his long-range strike was palmed away.

Bayern eventually broke through Gladbach's defences, when substitute Jamal Musiala squared it to Sane who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Gladbach almost hit Bayern on the counter again but Thuram couldn't get his shot past Neuer. Sommer continued his heroics despite Bayern’s equaliser as Mathijs De Ligt went close from the edge of the area.

This result ended Bayern's 100% record this season and sees Monchengladbach also remain unbeaten.
