Real Betis strengthened their grip on sixth place in La Liga after securing a resounding 4-0 win over mid-table Getafe, who have now lost their last four games in all competitions.

Antony has been one of Betis’ leading attacking threats so far this season, and were it not for his poor effort inside five minutes, he could have added another early goal to his collection.

Getafe goalkeeper David Soria was involved again shortly afterwards to deny Pablo Fornals, while Cucho Hernandez just failed to make a clean connection with Ángel Ortiz’s teasing cross for the hosts.

Betis eventually took the lead on 16 minutes, though, when Antony’s cross was met by Aitor Ruibal, whose header found Soria’s bottom right-hand corner. Not long after the half-hour mark, Antony passed up a chance to potentially double Los Verdiblancos’ advantage, cutting back onto his favoured left foot before having his shot blocked by Djene.

Manuel Pellegrini will have been pleased enough with his side’s work in the first half, with neither he nor opposite number José Bordalás making any substitutions at the break.

And Pellegrini was left feeling even happier just four minutes after the restart when a Betis counter-attack saw Antony’s curler hit Soria’s right-hand post before rebounding to Ruibal, who made no mistake to double his tally for the night.

Getafe’s evening quickly went from bad to worse as Hernandez’s ball over the top exploited a woeful defensive line from the visitors, with Fornals streaking clear to add his name to the scoresheet.

The Azulones thought for a second that they had reduced the deficit when Borja Mayoral nodded in at the back post only to be flagged offside, and that bad news for them was compounded when they soon conceded a fourth, with Marc Roca’s miskick in front of goal proving immaterial as Hernandez followed up to make it 4-0.

Antony had a chance to make the scoreline even more handsome and Fornals had a goal chalked off for offside, before Mayoral put a dubious late penalty wide as Betis coasted to an important victory in their fight for more European football.

This was the first time in 16 H2Hs that this fixture had produced at least four goals, and Betis now head into 2026 full of optimism ahead of a daunting trip to Real Madrid in a fortnight. Getafe, meanwhile, travel to Rayo Vallecano two days earlier looking to avoid getting sucked into a relegation scrap after toiling in Seville.
