Sixth in Pyeongchang in 2018, fifth at Beijing 2022; one could be forgiven that a seventh-placed finish for Sweden in the Milan-Cortina 2026 medal table was a step in the wrong direction.

In fact, a medal haul of eigth golds, six silvers and four bronzes is Sweden's best tally at a Winter Olympics ever, while 18 total medals matches the haul of Beijing four years ago, where another eight golds were accompanied by five silvers and five bronzes.

The 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles remains the last time Sweden came home with more than 18 medals - 19 to be precise, with just the two golds - while the country has not won more than eight golds at an Olympics since taking 12 at the 1952 Summer games in Helsinki.

"I am so proud of the squad and all the leaders," said Swedish Olympic Committee Chef de Mission, Fredrik Joulamo. "A very good confirmation that Swedish winter sports are of the highest international class."

A gold on the opening day for Frida Karlsson in the women's skiathlon saw the Swedish medal haul start as it meant to go on - by being dominated by the female cross-country skiiers, who contributed five of the six golds on offer, plus four silvers and a bronze.

Sweden even swept the podium in the sprint classical, as Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist took the minor medals behind Linn Svahn, while Ebba Andersson recovered from costly falls in the relay to win the inaugural women's 50km classical, receiving her medal at the closing ceremony.

"Once again we see how a good start to the Olympics through the skiathlon medals has a positive effect on the entire squad's performance during the games. The Swedish cross-country team is the best in the world on the women's side," said Joulamo, frankly.

Sweden also won two golds in curling, as sibling duo Isabella and Rasmus Wrana won the mixed doubles, before the women's team skipped by Anna Hasselborg took gold on the final day, their second gold in the last three Olympics.

"The curling team has charmed Sweden and the world. It is a huge achievement to win two out of three possible gold medals in an Olympic tournament," added the Chef de Mission.

Martin Ponsiluoma won the men's biathlon pursuit and was then part of the team that won bronze in the men's relay.

The women's relay team went one better by finishing second, while there was also alpine and freestyle skiing success, as Sara Hector took silver in the women's giant slalom, Anna Swenn-Larsson took bronze in the women's slalom and Sandra Naslund came third in the women's ski-cross.

"Gold, silver and bronze is a good outcome in biathlon. And it was close to being even better than that," Joulamo said, referring to other top-five finishes.

"It was extra emotional that both Sara and Anna won medals," he said of the alpine skiiers, calling them fine representatives of Swedish winter sports, while as for Naslund, who only recovered from injury just in time, he said: "Sandra's journey back to the competition slopes is a success in itself."
