VfB Stuttgart have moved three points clear of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga’s top four, following a 1-0 success over the Red Bulls at the MHPArena - their first win over any side that started this round inside the top five after four failed attempts.

Seeking to make a contribution in a fifth successive Bundesliga outing, Yan Diomande demonstrated his blistering pace in the opening five minutes. He burst past Ramon Hendriks and tried to square the ball to Romulo, but the Brazilian was unable to make a connection and prod into the net.

On the balance of play, Leipzig posed the greater danger in the opening half-hour, though Stuttgart’s first chance showed ample promise, as Ermedin Demirovic saw an attempted shot into the opposite corner of the Leipzig net deflected wide.

Each side forged chances to go ahead closer to half-time as well, with Christoph Baumgartner firstly finding space inside the box after collecting a pass, only to fire over the crossbar.

In response to that, Stuttgart could well have stolen a half-time lead with the final kick of the first half, as a free kick saw Chris Fuhrich lay the ball off for Jamie Leweling, who produced a daisycutter that Maarten Vandevoordt did well to palm away from the bottom-left corner.

The first 10 minutes of the second half only continued the end-to-end theme that was emerging, with fantastic saves from each goalkeeper separated by barely a minute.

Nicolas Seiwald saw a point-blank header palmed away by Alexander Nubel on the goalline, with Angelo Stiller completing the clearance, and sparking a counter that saw Deniz Undav rob Seiwald and force a Vandevoordt into another dramatic parry on the dive.

But Vandevoordt would then undo all that good work in the 56th minute, when he tried to pass downfield and could only find Fuhrich. He fed Undav in turn, who calmly picked his spot and slotted in the opener.

Only the quick thinking and astute tackling of Willi Orban prevented Undav from getting a second just after the hour mark. Yet, with each of the previous eight meetings seeing both teams score, few in attendance believed that Leipzig would go down without a fight.

And Stuttgart did indeed have to withstand a scare 10 minutes from the end, when Brajan Gruda’s flicked header found Johan Bakayoko from six yards out, though it came too quickly to the Belgian to be anything more than a half-chance.

Aside from Orban’s glancing header hitting the post in the third minute of injury time, Stuttgart ultimately held on with little drama from there, and in addition to creating a significant cushion from Leipzig in the Bundesliga’s top four, the Swabians have now bettered their win tally of the 2024/25 Bundesliga.

They also proudly stand unbeaten in six league games immediately following UEFA Europa League action (W5, D1), while Leipzig remain without successive away league wins since September 2025.
