Paris Saint-Germain started their defence of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) title with a scintillating display and 4-0 victory over Atalanta, ending La Dea’s eight-game unbeaten run in away games at this stage of the competition.

It took just three minutes for the reigning champions to get going, as Marquinhos ran up the pitch to pressurise Daniel Maldini and kept going once the ball had been won to provide the finish to Fabian Ruiz’s pass.

The pressure from Les Parisiens was relentless in the opening 10 minutes, with Nuno Mendes’ shot being touched wide and Senny Mayulu’s attempt being deflected behind before Bradley Barcola and Achraf Hakimi forced brilliant saves from Marco Carnesecchi.

Odilon Kossounou then had Atalanta’s first notable opportunity but ballooned his attempt harmlessly over the crossbar.

It didn’t take too long for PSG to put the ball in the back of La Dea’s net again, but Barcola had strayed marginally offside before being played through by Ruiz.

Mario Pasalic then headed behind from Raoul Bellanova’s cross as Atalanta grew into the game and started to limit the hosts.

That is until Khvicha Kvaratskhelia blew their defence wide open, gliding towards the edge of Atalanta’s box and smashing the ball past Carnesecchi.

PSG could have had another five minutes later when Yunus Musah clumsily fouled Marquinhos, but Barcola saw his tame penalty saved.

Ivan Juric responded with a double change at half-time, but it was futile as PSG had a third within six minutes of the restart as a wonderful move culminated in Mendes sitting down Marten de Roon and beating Carnesecchi from an impossibly tight angle.

There was concern for Les Parisiens as Joao Neves went off injured shortly before the hour mark, although Lucas Chevalier stopped Nikola Krstovic’s attempt to ensure the commanding nature of their lead remained intact.

After Goncalo Ramos had come agonisingly close to punishing a lax Isak Hien pass, Bellanova wasn’t as fortunate when the striker latched onto his tired backpass and dinked the ball over Carnesecchi.

That saw the scoreline reflect PSG’s dominance as they convincingly translated their winning habit from five matches in the UEFA Super Cup and Ligue 1 this term to the UCL, making a real statement after winning last year’s competition.

They also handed Atalanta their irst defeat of the campaign after La Dea had recorded two draws and a win in Serie A.
