Lazio advanced to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia for the second time in three years after beating 2025 winners Bologna via a penalty shootout with the score 1-1 after normal time at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

Ivan Provedel was forced into the game’s first save after 11 minutes from Santiago Castro’s knuckleball strike, shortly before Gustav Isaksen flashed wide.

Nicolo Cambiaghi then had a great double chance to open the scoring when his initial effort was stopped by Provedel’s leg, before smashing the rebound against the crossbar. Riccardo Orsolini was also dangerous as he cut inside before shooting just wide at the near post, with Bologna increasing the pressure.

The hosts eventually took the lead on the half-hour mark as Nikola Moro whipped a corner towards the near post for Castro to head home.

Interestingly, it was only the second time Bologna have scored first in 11 home matches in all competitions, and the first time Lazio have conceded the first goal in any of their previous six away fixtures.

The visitors were determined to cancel the deficit before half-time as Pedro’s lofted free-kick invited Daniel Maldini to volley towards goal, but Lukasz Skorupski parried away well. Unfortunately for the taker, he was replaced by Tijjani Noslin due to an injury.

However, Lazio’s luck turned as Noslin then scored the equaliser early in the second half, tapping home Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s precise cross.

Nicolo Rovella and Danilo Cataldi had further strikes that went narrowly wide, as the visitors gained some momentum back. However, they could not find another goal after 90 minutes, which meant a penalty shootout was needed to determine the winner.

Lazio went first as Nuno Tavares found the bottom corner, before Lewis Ferguson’s penalty was saved, giving the Eagles an immediate advantage. Boulaye Dia then stepped up and scored, before Thijs Dallinga halved the deficit. Adam Marusic restored the two-goal advantage for Lazio before Orsolini horribly dragged his penalty wide.

It meant that Kenneth Taylor just had to score to send the Eagles through, and he did just that as the holders were knocked out on their own patch, as their winless home streak stretched to eight competitive matches (D3, L5).

Lazio are unbeaten in six away games as a result (W2, D4), and now have a semi-final to look forward to.
