Cricket Australia confirmed Cummins will miss the game "as part of his ongoing management plan".

Australia have named a 15-man squad for the fourth Test to begin in Melbourne on Friday.

Nathan Lyon has been left out following his hamstring injury sustained on the final day of the third Test in Adelaide.

Steve Smith makes his return after missing that match with vertigo-related illness and will take the captain's armband again from Cummins

Jhye Richardson and Todd Murphy have been drafted into the squad as likely replacements for Cummins and Lyon respectively, with Richardson recently making a successful return to red ball cricket and missing the start of the BBL season to prepare for a Test recall.

Smith's return likely means Josh Inglis gets dropped with Usman Khawaja slotting into the number five slot after scoring an impressive 82 & 40 in Adelaide last week.

Australia 15-man fourth Test squad:

Steve Smith (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster
