Danish skipper Madeleine Dupont explained after the defeat against the USA that she and the rest of the Danish team have been heavily affected by the fact that Dupont's mother-in-law suffered a heart attack three days before, while she was cheering on the girls in Italy.

Denmark on Tuesday afternoon chose to give up after the seventh end when they were behind 10-3 against the USA, which makes it highly questionable whether the Danes will be able make it to the semi-finals with only two games left.

After the game, Dupont explained to DR Sporten after the game that the Danish team had been heavily mentally affected by a personal tragedy after Dupont's mother-in-law suffered a heart attack three days ago and is currently hospitalized in Milan.

"I think I've had a really tough week. It's hard to perform. I try to play curling when I'm playing curling. But it's incredibly difficult when your head is in all sorts of other places."

"It's my mother-in-law, who collapsed with a heart attack here in Italy three days ago. She's in the hospital waiting to wake up", she said.

Madeleine Dupont explains that sometimes it's been tough keeping the focus on curling with her mother-in-law in the back of her mind.

"It's super hard to endure. They were just here to cheer and follow along and be great Danish fans. I am struggling to try to perform at the same time without constantly thinking about whether someone has written or called."

"I want to be on the ice, but it just takes up an insane amount of space in my head. When things go a little wrong, like they did today, it's just hard to pull yourself up one hundred percent."
