Donald Trump has long advocated for control over Greenland and on Sunday reiterated his interest in taking over the Arctic territory rich on minerals.
“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security,” Trump said Sunday on Air Force One after the U.S. strike on Venezuela.
Trump's statement immediately raised alarm in Denmark, who are responsible for the defense of Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory.
“I have to say this very directly to the United States: It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Sunday in a Facebook post.
Former Danish national team coach Kasper Hjulmand on Tuesday posted a message on LinkedIn with a picture of the Arctic territory embraced in the Greenland flag, saying:
"Happy New Year to all. In a crazy and rapidly changing world, where the enemy for some leaders in the world is knowledge, international structures, dialogue, and respect for cultural differences. For people like them, the world is for predators. But there’s another way."
"I hope for more humanity, empathy, and love. More knowledge and understanding. More listening. My warmest thoughts go to the beautiful Greenlandic people."
Kasper Hjulmand's girlfriend, Maliina Abelsen, is from Greenland.
After the winter break, Bayer Leverkusen and Kasper Hjulmand will be in action again in the upcoming weekend on Saturday at home against VfB Stuttgart.
