It may be an international break in the football world, but there is still plenty of massive sporting action to look forward to. The 2026 World Cup play-off finals are set to take place, the Indian Premier League gets underway, the Miami Open comes to an end, and more!

Here is what our editors will be watching this weekend:

All weekend

Miami semi-finals and finals

After a fascinating fortnight in Miami, it is finals weekend for the WTA and ATP tournaments. First up is the WTA final on Saturday evening as the top seed Aryna Sabalenka takes on the fourth seed and long-term rival Coco Gauff.

Sabalenka heads to the final in imperious form after winning the title in Indian Wells earlier this month. The world number one showcased just how hard she is to beat after swatting aside the in-form Elena Rybakina with ease in the semi-final, just a fortnight after beating the world number two in the Indian Wells final.

Sabalenka has yet to drop a set in Miami after dropping just one set in Indian Wells, so it goes without saying she heads into Saturday's final as the big favourite. Gauff, though, is one of the few players on tour whose game suits facing Sabalenka and the American proved in last year's French Open final that she can get the better of Sabalenka on the big stage.

The last time the two met, though, in the WTA Finals, it was Sabalenka who came out on top in dominant fashion, and although Gauff has returned to form in Miami, Sabalenka remains the favourite.

Over on the men's side, Friday's semi-finals will determine who is involved in Sunday's final. The first semi-final is Jiri Lehecka against Arthur Fils in a clash between two evenly matched players who have knocked out home favourites Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul en route to the last four.

In the later semi, the red-hot Jannik Sinner will fancy his chances of beating Alexander Zverev again (after his straight-set victory over the German in the Indian Wells semi-finals), and if he does, Sunday's final would very much be his to lose.

If Sabalenka and Sinner both win the titles as expected, it will be only the fourth time the same woman and man have won Indian Wells and Miami in the same year.

Heavyweight women's football clashes

While there will be little to no meaningful football on the men's side this weekend, there are a few fascinating matchups in the world of women's footy.

The season is quickly coming to an end, with several sides fighting for domestic titles, European places and, in some countries, trying to stay in their league. Here are four games to look out for.

We start with what should be a cracking Manchester Derby between WSL leaders Manchester City and a side chasing them, Manchester United. City cruised to a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture and will lock down a spot in the Women's Champions League next term with a win.

United, meanwhile, have just one victory in their last five across all competitions, with their hopes of a first-ever top-flight title looking rather grim.

Next, the North London Derby occurs between Arsenal and Tottenham. The Gunners go into this one in great form, having won their last 10 since their League Cup elimination in January. They are hoping to lock down a top-three spot to secure UWCL football next term.

Spurs, meanwhile, had an excellent start to their campaign, but have lost four of their last six in the league, ending their hopes of continental play.

The second of a three-game run between Barcelona and Real Madrid will occur in Spain, with the former well on their way to more domestic success. The pair met in the UWCL midweek, with Barca running away 6-2 winners.

Real have beaten their heated rivals before, with their only success coming last term away. Seeing the sides will meet once more days later in continental form, it adds an extra intrigue to how this one could go.

Finally, PSG head to Nantes in the Premiere League, looking to make it five league wins on the spin. Les Canaries have made the most of their opponents, having a rather poor season for their standards. Sitting in second, Nantes are nearing a spot in the end-of-season playoffs, something they could clinch this weekend.

PSG, meanwhile, are fourth, having rediscovered their form. While they were given a scare last time out at bottom side Montpellier, they will surely be favourites to come out on top at Stade Marcel Saupin.

It will be a thrilling weekend of women's football. So, if you need something to keep you entertained over the next couple of days, look no further!

Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Sunrisers Hyderabad - 15:00 CET

One of the biggest and most valuable sports leagues in the world, cricket’s Indian Premier League, gets underway this weekend, as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru go head-to-head with the power-packed Sunrisers Hyderabad.

10 teams are set to battle it out over the next two months, and this clash is likely to be a big-scoring affair to set the tone.

RCB finally won their first IPL title last year after several near misses, and go in as one of the favourites again. An opening partnership of Indian legend Virat Kohli and Phil Salt is going to be box office, while England’s young superstar Jacob Bethell is set to take on a more important role.

Meanwhile, SRH arguably have the most powerful batting line-up in the competition, with heavy-hitters Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Liam Livingstone and Heinrich Klaasen enough to terrify any bowling attack.

However, both teams will be missing a key Australian bowler, with RCB’s Josh Hazlewood and SRH’s Pat Cummins ruled out of the first few games with injury.

It is a particularly major blow to Sunrisers, as Cummins is their talismanic captain and their bowling attack is light as it is. As a result, Kishan is set to take on the captaincy role.

Indian fans will flood in to catch the opening game, and the atmosphere will be incredible. The IPL is back!

Japanese Grand Prix - 07:00 CET

Formula 1 is heading to one of its truly iconic tracks for the first time in 2026 this weekend, with Suzuka playing host to the third round of the season.

The track has always been a favourite among drivers and fans for its fast and challenging nature, so it will be the best test yet of the new regulations.

Whether it remains a high-speed rollercoaster of a circuit with these cars will go a long way to determining whether significant rule changes will be introduced in the month-long break that will follow the race.

Regardless of the speeds they’re going at, though, we can be certain that those at the front of the field will give us some thrilling battles again.

Thanks to their rapid starts and the resurgence of Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari are set to take the fight to Mercedes for the third race in a row, and if practice is anything to go by, McLaren will be in the mix too.

The Mercs are likely to see off their rivals, but which one of their drivers will prevail is a tantalising sub-plot in itself. George Russell remains the clear championship favourite, but if Kimi Antonelli can build on his maiden victory last time out in China by beating his teammate again, that will change.

Will Russell reassert his dominance, or will a title fight be ignited in the land of the rising sun?

Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Italy - 20:45 CET

A break from our usual schedule, as Editors' Picks heads into the new week for a rare foray - but for good reason.

After Thursday's European playoff semi-finals, eight teams are left in with a shout of making it to the 2026 World Cup. All the ties have plenty of narrative, but we have picked Italy's trip to Bosnia as the standout.

The Azzurri saw off Northern Ireland to book their trip to eastern Europe, and were filmed celebrating Bosnia's penalty shootout win over Wales, suggesting they are thrilled to not be going to Cardiff.

That should be all the fuel the Bosnians need to shock the 2006 champions. Led by 40-year-old veteran Edin Dzeko, his side have only been to the World Cup once before - back in 2014. That was, coincidentally, the last time Italy qualified for the tournament in what has been a tough decade for the Italians.

They are not being led by Gianluigi Donnarumma as captain and keeper, but there are still question marks over their strikeforce. Moise Kean did score against the Northern Irish, but he is not the elite striker Italy have had in tournaments past.

Given this is just a one-legged tie, we don't expect an entertaining game, but a tense and tight tussle that could go all the way. If Italy are eliminated at this stage, an existential crisis in Italian football won't be far behind.
