Manchester City booked their place in the knockout rounds of the FIFA Club World Cup after easing to a 6-0 triumph over Al Ain, who exit the competition after conceding eleven goals in just two matches.

City dominated the game from the outset and only needed eight minutes to open the scoring.

Ilkay Gundogan showed class and composure in the box to gather a loose ball, and although he may have been attempting a delicate cross, his effort looped high over Khalid Eisa and dropped into the net.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic as Al Zaeem tried to generate a response, and they almost got it when Nassim Chadli raced clear, but his goalbound effort was tipped wide by Stefan Ortega.

The respite was only temporary, and a second goal arrived just before the half-hour mark.

There may have been questions about the solidity of the defensive wall, but Claudio Echeverri’s expertly curled free-kick marked his first goal for the club and made it 2-0.

It went from bad to worse for Al Ain just before the break when a VAR review ruled that Ramy Rabia dragged Manuel Akanji to the floor in the box, and Erling Haaland casually tucked the resultant spot kick home.

Vladimir Ivic made a double change at the break, but it failed to turn the tide as City continued to push for more goals.

Haaland was denied by a fantastic double save from Eisa, but the fourth goal came on 73 minutes.

Gundogan showed his quality again with a fantastic first touch to create space in the box, and there was no doubting his intentions this time as he casually lifted the ball over Eisa.

There was still time for more, as Oscar Bobb tucked the ball home at the near post before Rayan Cherki grabbed his first City goal to round off the scoring.

The result sets up a showdown between Man City and Juventus in the final match. Both teams have a 100% record and have the chance to top the group, whilst Al Ain are eliminated and will face a dead rubber with Wydad.
