Fiorentina finally won their first Serie A game this season at the 16th attempt after thrashing 10-man Udinese 5-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The hosts were boosted by an early red card for Udinese when goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was dismissed for a collision with Moise Kean outside of his area. Fiorentina almost capitalised immediately when Rolando Mandragora’s free-kick clipped the top of the bar, before Albert Guðmundsson also struck the woodwork when his shot from the edge of the box hit the post.

La Viola would not wait much longer for the breakthrough, though, as Mandragova was on target with a free-kick this time, striking through a disappointing wall. Guðmundsson then netted his sixth goal this term with a beautiful finish after turning away from his defender, before Cher Ndour made it three before the break after heading home Nicolò Fagioli’s cross.

Udinese did threaten a consolation early in the second half when David de Gea saved Hassane Kamara’s effort, and from the resulting corner, Oumar Solet should have done better with a free header that he directed wide.

However, Fiorentina added a fourth soon after as Kean tapped in a rebound after Fabiano Parisi originally struck the post. Solet did reply with a lovely solo goal as he curled into the bottom corner from range.

La Viola remain the only side without a home clean sheet in the league this season, but Kean added some gloss to the scoreline by netting his brace, finishing well after latching onto a through ball.

There are still problems at Fiorentina as they remain bottom of the table, but a fourth Serie A H2H victory in six against Udinese should boost confidence.

The visitors’ inconsistency continues to haunt them as they missed the chance to record successive league wins for just the second time this campaign.
