Former Newcastle United goalkeeper and Netherlands international Tim Krul has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.
Tim Krul was best known for being Newcastle United’s first goalkeeper between 2010 and 2015 and playing 185 games for the Magpies, but had his best moment during the 2014 World Cup when he became the Netherlands’ hero with three saves in the quarter-final penalty shootout against Costa Rica.
Krul, who hadn’t played since a 2-0 FA Cup loss with Luton Town away at Manchester City on February 27th, 2024, announced his retirement in a statement on social media.
“As I hang up my gloves after 20 incredible years as a professional football player, I want to take a moment to reflect on my journey,” Krul said.
“From joining Newcastle as a 17-year-old boy, to representing Holland on the international stage. I have truly lived the dream I had as a young boy. Every match, every training session, and every rollercoaster moment has shaped me into who I am today.”
Krul played a total of 429 games at the senior level between 2006 and 2024, representing Newcastle United, Falkirk, Carlisle United, Jong Ajax, AZ, Brighton & Hove Albion, Norwich City, and Luton Town during that time.
For the Netherlands, he played 15 games after debuting in a friendly against Brazil on June 4th, 2011. Krul, whose famous cameo against Costa Rica was his only match at a major tournament, played his last international game against Scotland on June 2nd, 2021.
He concluded his retirement announcement with some words of gratitude.
“Thank you to the clubs, coaches, teammates, my beautiful family, and, most importantly, you fans for your support throughout my career. I am excited for the next chapter and will always cherish the memories made on the pitch. Here’s to new adventures off the pitch!”
