SC Magdeburg on Saturday took a huge step toward the Handball Bundesliga title when the Champions League winners triumphed in a high-quality duel against the defending champions Fuchse Berlin, winning 3533 (15-15), to move eight points clear of the Berlin side in the table.

While the title is not yet mathematically decided, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team now holds all the cards. As league leaders, Magdeburg has a seven-point cushion over SG Flensburg-Handewitt, with Berlin just behind. After their surprise defeat at MT Melsungen on Friday, THW Kiel is out of the running.

Leading goalscorer for the hosts on Saturday was Magnus Saugstrup with nine goals, while Füchse’s standout player, as so often before, was World Handball Player Mathias Gidsel with eleven goals. The goalkeepers also played a decisive role.

Füchse keeper Dejan Milosavljev frustrated Magdeburg in the first half with several saves on penalty throws, but Magdeburg goalkeeper Matej Mandic was crucial to the team’s strong second-half performance.

Fiercely Contested Until the End

"If anyone can beat Magdeburg, it’s most likely Berlin," said national coach Alfred Gislason before the match. The Füchse started with great focus and showed plenty of variety in attack. In goal, they could rely on Milosavljev, who was especially tough for Magdeburg to beat from the penalty line.

Still, neither team managed to pull away. As expected, the match was hard-fought and close, with Füchse holding a slight edge in the first half. But with the support of their fans and the strong performance of keeper Mandic, the hosts fought their way back into the game and secured the win in the second half.
