Füchse Berlin on Sunday bounced back from their defeat in the Handball-Bundesliga against Flensburg as they secured a 35-28 win against HSG Wetzlar, who were playing the first match under new head coach Runar Sigtryggsson.

On Thursday, with Wetzlar sitting 17th in the table, Momir Ilic resigned as head coach due to the team’s ongoing struggles. His successor, former Leipzig coach Runar Sigtryggsson, had to deal with an early setback in his debut match.

Wetzlar’s left wing Ahmed Nafea hit Hakun West’s foot with his shot right at the start, forcing the Egyptian to leave the court with assistance. After that, World Handball Player of the Year Mathias Gidsel took charge and ensured a clear win against a determined Wetzlar side. The Dane was leading goalscorer with ten goals from eleven attempts, while Philipp Ahouansou netted eight times for Wetzlar.

After celebrating seven straight wins in November, Füchse have managed just two wins in their last four competitive matches.

At the top of the table, Magdeburg, with Magnus Saugstrup, were left to fight hard for a 32-31 win over VfL Gummersbach.

Led by Omar Magnusson, who was the leading goal scorer with eleven goals from fifteen attempts, Bennet Wiegert's team ultimately managed to win the away game.

Left winger Matthias Musche scored the winning goal for the visitors from seven meters in the final minute, sparking jubilant celebrations, before his goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez made a brilliant last-second save on a Gummersbach counterattack to secure the win.
