Füchse Berlin on Thursday took their sixth successive Champions League victory when they recorded a narrow 32-31 win against Hungarian handball record champions Veszprém KC. The win could, however, have come at a high price as key profile Fabian Wiede apparently suffered a serious injury when he fell awkwardly in the opening phase, immediately grabbed his knee and left the court on a stretcher to the applause of the Hungarian crowd.

However, Wiede's teammates knew how to handle the early shock as Füchse keeper Dejan Milosavljev led the Berliners to victory with a total of 16 saves, while Danish world handball player Mathias Gidsel, as usual, was the leading goalscorer for the visitors with six goals.

The reigning Bundesliga champions have thus opened up a gap in Group A, which Füchse coach Nicolej Krickau said they were aiming for before the match.

The Berlin club maintained their two-point lead over their closest rivals, Aalborg HB, with twelve points from six games, while Veszprém suffered their first home defeat of the CL season and is now six points behind the leaders.

Against Veszprém's "800 quality players", as Krickau had urgently warned about before the game, it was keeper Milosavljev who repeatedly defended the lead with great saves.

In addition to Wiede, Berlin also had to do without Max Darj early on, as he quickly had to call it a day after being handed three two-minute suspensions.

The Hungarians made the game exciting towards the end as they reduced the deficit to one goal, but it was too little too late against the reigning Bundesliga champions.
