When the Swiss national handball team faces Denmark on Sunday at the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich, they will play before the largest crowd ever to attend a handball match on Swiss soil. With over 10,300 tickets sold, the previous record has already been surpassed.

The previous record dates back to 5 November, 2016, when 10,040 fans gathered at Zurich’s Hallenstadion to watch a European Championship qualifier between Switzerland and Germany.

Back then Germany scored the decisive goal with 50 seconds left on the clock, while Switzerland’s final attempt narrowly missed the target.

This new record-breaking match also features a personal link to that past encounter: Andy Schmid, who scored five goals for Switzerland against the German team in 2016, now leads the national squad as head coach in this clash against Denmark.

The match against the reigning Olympic, World, and European champions is taking place as part of the EHF Euro Cup.
