Five Danes were in action for Flensburg-Handewitt when they won 40-35 over Montpellier in the European League on Tuesday evening. But the victory and the match was overshadowed by a tragedy before the start of the match.

Consequently, there was no music and players weren't presented in the same way as usual. The Flensburg fans also suspended support out of respect for the deceased, says the German club on its website.

Flensburg-Handewitt does not mention whether it was a bystander who died, and the cause of the tragedy is not mentioned either. But the match did go ahead.

"In these difficult hours, our thoughts are with the relatives and friends of the deceased. Handball and all sports take a back seat today", says Flensburg's managing director Holger Glandorf in a post on the club's Facebook page.
