Reigning Danish champions Aalborg Handball on Saturday evening suffered a shocking defeat in the first round of the Danish Championship playoffs against Fredericia 36-41

Thomas Arnoldsen and Juri Knorr scored a combined 24 goals for Aalborg, but Fredericia held on and won thanks to a great performance from Mads Kjeldgaard, among others.

Fredericia took eighth place in the table in the last round of the regular season and just made it to the playoffs.

They entered a difficult group on paper, against not least Aalborg, who have had a superb season. The team, who claimed first spot in the league in the regular season, lost only one match this season in the penultimate round of the season and has otherwise looked invincible.

Despite being favourites, the visitors from Aalborg had a rocky start against Fredericia on Saturday evening. The home team played well and took the lead several times in the first half.

However, the individual quality was clearly evident through Aalborg's Arnoldsen, who scored eight times in the first half, while Knorr added five in the first 30 minutes. This allowed the visitors to go into the break with a 20-17 lead.

Fredericia, however, by no means gave up. On the contrary, they came out in the second half with excellent build-up and quickly took the lead again. With about 20 minutes left in the game, the home team was leading 28-25.

The home team was simply better in the second half and ended up winning big. Kjeldgaard was Fredericia's leading goal scorer with ten goals.
