Denmark had a tough start to Monday's group final as the Romanians took the Danish players by surprise loudly applauded by the Romanian fans in the stands.
The stress level was high for a while among Helle Thomsen's girls who struggled to contain the threat of Sorina Grozav and the skilled line player Lorena Ostase.
On Denmark's right wing, captain Trine Ostergaard was back in the starting line-up after having twisted her ankle in the preparations for the tournament but she was not at her usual level in the opening phase as Romania took a 4-2 lead.
The Danes managed to restore parity within a couple of minutes but coach Helle Thomsen would have been worried to see the frailty of the Danish defense.
Denmark never found the solution to stop the Romanians, but were saved by a strong attack which produced 21 goals before the break, which was three more than the Romanians.
However, within the first three minutes of the second half, the Danes lost the lead as Anne Mette Hansen squandered two open chances and Helena Elver threw the ball into the hands of an opponent.
The Danes looked visibly shaken, and when Romania also managed to edge ahead, Helle Thomsen took a timeout which proved effective.
Suddenly Romania looked completely paralysed, while the Danish attack, which had otherwise come to a complete standstill, again regained the rhythm. and from there on the victory was never in doubt.
