ZSC Lions Zurich have won the Champions Hockey League (CHL) for the first time in the current format after a 2-1 win over Farjestad Kalstad in the CHL Final 2025 at the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich.

A new name on the trophy was guaranteed in a match between two first-time finalists of the new format and it was the visiting side from Sweden who made the brighter start, registering the first five shots of the match.

Buoyed by vocal home support, Zurich grew into the game during the first period and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute when Derek Grant produced a fine save from goaltender Maxime Legace following his one-time shovel shot.

That looked to be the best chance of the opening period until just over two minutes before its end when constant pressure in the attacking zone from the hosts forced August Tornberg to miscontrol the puck and present Sven Andrighetto with the perfect chance to score his ninth CHL goal of the season.

The Swiss international shot low past Legace to become the outright top scorer in the 2024/25 CHL.

Farjestad put 10 past Sparta Prague in their aggregate semi-final win, while ZSC struck nine times to knock out reigning champions Geneve-Servette HC in an all-Swiss semi-final.

But a similar scoring rate seemed unlikely by the midpoint in the second period, with goaltenders Legace and Simon Hrubec on top, making five saves apiece.

However, that changed with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the period, when Denis Malgin burst into the attacking zone on the left wing.

He picked out Rudolfs Balcers in the centre, who played the puck across to the awaiting Andrighetto who drilled it into the top corner to reach double figures and double the Lions' tally.

Farjestad challenged the call, claiming offside, but after review, the original decision stood.

Things could have got worse for Tomas Mitell's men soon after, but Legace made superb saves to deny both Justin Sigrist and Vinzenz Rohrer in one-on-one situations.

Tripping by Dean Kukan and high-sticking by Patrick Geering gave Farjestad either a powerplay or a 5-on-3 situation for the final three minutes of the second, but they could not find a way through the resolute Zurich defence.

The Kalstad club continued to probe early in the third quarter and were agonisingly close to halving the deficit when Oskar Steen struck the pipes, but their first goal of the game finally arrived with nine minutes to go.

With Malgin sin-binned for boarding, Farjestad made the man advantage count when Per Aslund converted from close range after a good feed from David Tomasek.

The visitors pulled the goalie in the final minutes, but one final defensive effort was enough to secure the trophy.

Having been won exclusively by Swedish and Finnish clubs in its first eight editions, the CHL has now been won by teams from Switzerland in back-to-back years.

Farjestad must now turn their attentions back to the defence of the Swedish Hockey League title, where they currently sit fourth in the standings.
