Hall of Famer Mark Messier personally awards the honour to a player who leads by positive example both on and off the ice, with teammates, fans, and local charities.
"I've been lucky enough to play with some of the greatest players ever," said Ovechkin in an interview with Messier.
Ovechkin has been a pillar in the Washington, D.C. community since he was drafted, becoming the standard for athletes all around the country for his contributions to youth hockey, cancer research, and so much more.
The list of players who have received the award, which began after the 2006-2007 season, consists of many future Hall of Famers, including Sidney Crosby, Patrice Bergeron, Jonathan Toews, and former Capitals teammate Zdeno Chara.
Ovechkin can now add the award to his ever-growing list of honours that includes the following:
