The contract will hold a $5.85 million average annual value. Thompson, who was sent to the Caps in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knight on June 29, 2024, was in the final year of what was his former three-year contract.

Thomspon has arguably been the best goalie in the NHL this season and is a massive cornerstone to the team's stunning success after many had the Capitals not even making the playoffs. Now, they're the best team in the NHL behind Thompson's 2.09 goals against average (2nd in the NHL) and .925 save percentage (3rd).
The Capitals are 22-5 with Thompson in net this year. He needs just three more shutouts to reach five on the year, which would surpass more than he's had his entire career (4) previous to this season. Thompson has only allowed five goals over the past five games, including two shutouts.
"I think I am just having a lot of fun and not thinking, just going out there and playing has kind of been my new mindset this year and it's just been a lot of fun. I am enjoying every minute of it."
Washington will face the Calgary Flames on January 28th for their next game.
