The Buffalo Sabres and Calgary Flames, who have struggled for much of the National Hockey League (NHL) season, came out on top in their respective games in a Sunday with few goals.

Buffalo Sabres 4-1 Carolina Hurricanes

It was a dominant win from the Buffalo Sabres, who topped the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 4-1. Having prevailed the night before, the hosts went up 5:51 in from Alex Tuch, who made the most of a power play.

The Canes responded later in the frame through Shayne Gostisbehere. Also on a man advantage situation, the defenceman made the most of the situation to tie the game.

It all went downhill from there for Carolina though, as the Sabres scored twice in the second period. Jack Quinn gave them the lead 3:55 after the intermission, before Beck Malenstyen doubled the advantage just before the period was up.

Despite mustering 56 shots to Buffalo's 37, the Hurricanes failed to make the most of their opportunities. Tage Thompson added an empty net goal just before the end of regulation to secure the win for the Sabres in front of their homes fans.

Buffalo have now scored 13 times in their last two games as they get off the foot of the Eastern Conference Standings. Carolina, meanwhile, remain top of the conference despite losing for just the sixth time in regulation. No team in the East have fewer defeats.

Vancouver Canucks 2-5 Calgary Flames

An all-Canadian clash ended in the Calgary Flames' favour in a 5-2 defeat of the Vancouver Canucks. However, the Albertans had to come from behind, as Filip Hronek put the hosts in front a minute and change in.

Calgary, winners of their last two, got on the board six and a half minutes later via Morgan Frost. It then took them just 35 seconds to take the lead. Connor Zary got in on the scoring as the winger put his team in front for the first time on the night.

The Flames built on their lead in the second period, adding a pair more. Kevin Bahl found the back of the net on a tight angle with an impressive shot. It got worse for the Canucks, as Yegor Sharangovich made it 4-1 six minutes later.

The game would be put beyond doubt with 12 minutes left in regulation, where Blake Coleman scored on a shorthanded play to give Calgary their fifth of the night. Although Quinn Hughes got one back moments later, it was not enough for Vancouver.

It is three wins on the bounce for the Flames, who have moved three points clear of the Nashville Predators at the bottom of the Western Conference. They are now a point behind the Canucks, losers of their last three.

In the other NHL games on Sunday, the Minnesota Wild got a road win against the Winnipeg Jets 3-0, while the New York Islander edged the Seattle Kraken 1-0 in a shootout.

Cale Makar scored the only goal of the game as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 1-0 on the road, and the San Jose Sharks scored once in each period in their 3-1 defeat of the Boston Bruins.
