The National Hockey League's (NHL) six-game slate gave fans plenty of excitement as the league's worst San Jose Sharks upset the league's hottest team in the Toronto Maple Leafs while the Montreal Canadiens kept their own win streak alive.

San Jose finally put one in the win column after losing eight straight games to put a stop to the Maple Leafs' five-game win streak.

John Tavares (24) and Matthew Knies (24) got the Leafs up 2-0 in the second period. But Jack Thompson (3) and Tyler Toffoli (23) answered in the third period to send the game into overtime and then to a shootout.

William Nylander scored first for the Leafs but Toffoli quickly responded with a goal of his own before teammate Fabian Zetterlund sent one home to give the Sharks a 3-2 win.

Three of the last four games for San Jose have seen overtime play and now they finally came out on top.

Canadiens 4-3 Sabres

Cole Caufield got things started after he earned his 30th goal of the season in Montreal's Monday night win over the Sabres, making it the first 30-goal season of his career.

Montreal scored two more after Caufield's thanks to Nick Suzuki (19) and Juraj Slafkovsky (11).

Buffalo responded with three goals of their own to send it to overtime courtesy of Alex Tuch (23), Tage Thompson (29), and Rasmus Dahlin (10).

But just over a minute into OT, Mike Matheson (5) put one in net to give Montreal their fifth straight win - now the best win streak in the league.

Panthers 2-1 Lightning

The Panthers weather the storm and shut down their state-rival Lightning's league-best eight-game win streak.

Aleksander Barkov (16) scored both of the goals for Florida, securing a win in newly acquired defenceman Seth Jones' debut with the team.

Brayden Point (32) scored a backhanded goal in the period but the Lightning couldn't muster up any more. This game marks Tampa's first one-goal game since their 4-1 upset loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on January 28th.

Capitals 5-4 Senators

The Caps managed to stay alive in a game the Sens came back from being down 3-0, ending their three-game losing streak.

Ottawa's star Brady Tkachuk (23) tied the game up in the third period after getting into a fight with Capitals' Tom Wilson earlier in the game.

Ultimately, Dylan Strome won it for the Caps during the shootout on a beauty after the Sens failed to put one in the net.

The Capitals get revenge after losing to the Senators 5-4 in overtime back on January 30th.

Rangers 4-0 Islanders

The Islanders dropped yet another game to the Rangers after recently losing to them 5-1 just three games ago on February 25th.

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin earned his fourth shutout of the season after making 21 saves.

Meanwhile, the Islanders fall to the third-worst record (27-26-7) in the Eastern Conference and have now been shut out seven times this season.

Blackhawks 5-1 Kings

Five different players scored in the Blackhawks' five-goal win over the Los Angeles Kings.

The win now puts the Blackhawks on a two-game win streak following their five-straight losses.

Newly acquired goaltender Spencer Knight put up a whopping 41 saves for the Blackhawks, marking the best game of his career since he had a 40-save shutout against the Florida Panthers on November 9, 2022.

The Kings have now lost an NHL-worst four straight games, being outscored 18-6.
