After three successive defeats against big ice hockey nations at the World Championships, Denmark on Wednesday night recorded their first win in the tournament through a 5-1 win against Kazakhstan to preserve their chances reaching the quarterfinals.

The Danish spectators were, however, far from entertained during the first period where the visitors led the shots-on-goal statistics 7-1, while the Danes seemed affected by the occasion and the crucial importance of the game.

Part of the history was also that the hosts for a great part of the first period were outnumbered three times due to unnecessary two-minute penalties and never gained an advantage in the five-on-five game.

Four minutes into the second period, the local crowd in Herning were finally given something to cheer about, when the Danes maintained their attack after squandering a big chance, and Joachim Blichfeld found attacking colleague Mikkel Aagaard who blistered the puck past Kazakhstan goalkeeper Maxim Pavlenko.

Then eight minutes later Denmark doubled their with their first powerplay goal at the World Championships. Forward Alexander True controlled the puck from a hard delivery from forward Patrick Russell at the far post and steered the puck past Maxim Pavlenko.

Six minutes into the third period, Kazakhstan were then handed a lifeline, when Roman Starchenko seemed about to lose the puck behind the goal, but managed to flick it up in the air at the near post, where Nikita Mikhailis stole in to steer the puck between Frederik Dichow's arm and leg.

But as visitors looked to make the most of their momemtum, the Danes quickly killed off any hopes of a likely comeback with two goals in quick succcession as Christian Wejse made it 3-1 after a powerplay and then just 20 seconds later, the Boxen Arena erupted once more, when Alexander True steered a backhand past Pavlenko, when he was put clean through from a terrific delivery from Markus Lauridsen.

Nick Olesen then put the icing on the cake rolling the puck into the empty net just before the end.

The Danes now look to nenew their rivalry with Norway as the two Scandinavian nations come face to face on Friday evening.
