The Houston Texans granted running Joe Mixon's request for release on Friday, creating $8 million in cap space.

Mixon, 29, missed the entire 2025 season with a foot injury. In 2024, he posted 1,325 total yards (1,016 rushing) and 12 touchdowns (11 rushing) in 14 games with the Texans

The vet spent the first seven years of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. Now, he'll be looking to join his third team as he enters his ninth year in the league. Mixon has five 1,000-yard seasons on the ground and has posted at least 1,200+ scrimmage yards in six of the eight years he's been in the league.

Mixon was originally acquired via trade with the Bengals. He was followed by veteran Nick Chubb, who was signed as a free agent before this past season. Then, this offseason, the Texans acquired Lions running back David Montgomery in a trade to fill the role Mixon leaves behind.

Montgomery, 28, posted 908 scrimmage yards - a career low - with eight touchdowns. Although his career low in scrimmage yards can be attributed to the Lions favoring of Jahmyr Gibbs in the run game,
