SG Flensburg-Handewitt dramatically won the top clash of Matchday 9 against Füchse Berlin and stormed back to the top of the Handball-Bundesliga on Sunday. The former Champions League winners edged past the cup holders 34-33 (17-19) in a thriller, thanks to Simon Pytlick converting a direct free throw after the clock had expired, and remain the league’s only unbeaten team.

Thanks to the win Flensburg moved back above northern rivals THW Kiel with 17 points, although Kiel have played one more match. Füchse (10 points) are already well adrift after suffering their third defeat of the season. Denmark’s Emil Jacobsen was the standout performer for Flensburg with nine goals, while Berlin’s top star Mathias Gidsel could not prevent defeat despite scoring 11 times. The match-winner for Flensburg was Pytlick, who fired the ball through Berlin’s wall in the final play and found the bottom-right corner.
