A second-half goal from Lazio's talismanic striker Ciro Immobile and another from Luis Alberto in stoppage time was enough to earn the Rome club a 2-0 triumph over Verona at the Stadio Olimpico.

Fresh from their midweek European victory, Lazio welcomed Hellas Verona to the Italian capital hoping to avoid consecutive league defeats at home for the first time since December 2020.

It didn’t take the hosts long to get going, almost taking the lead through Manuel Lazzari, but he was denied by an alert Lorenzo Montipo.

Lazio continued to turn up the heat, and saw deflected efforts from Adam Marusic and Felipe Anderson go narrowly wide in quick succession.

Verona then reminded everyone that they still posed a real threat, as Kevin Lasagna showed a great turn of pace to get in behind the Lazio defence before putting his shot tamely wide.

Montipo kept his side in the game during the closing stages of the first half, firstly by somehow tipping Nicolo Casale effort onto the post, and then denying Immobile from close range.

Thomas Henry also saw a volley rattle the crossbar in injury time to give Lazio a big let off.

The second half was a far more evenly-matched affair, with the game opening up and presenting chances for both sides. But the substitution of Alberto helped Lazio get the game back under their control, and the Spaniard was inches away from drawing first blood when he curled an effort just past the post.

Lazio’s reward soon came though, as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s wonderful cross found Immobile at the back post to score with a simple header.

While he may have sensed that goal was enough to mark his 100th victory across 141 goalscoring appearances with Lazio, Immobile should have sealed the victory 10 minutes from time, doing brilliantly to shrug off Isak Hien and bear down on goal, but once again he was denied by Montipo with a brilliant save.

Montipo was at hand again, this time stopping Matteo Cancellieri with a smart save.

Instead of Cancellieri, who saw a late goal ruled out for offside, it was Alberto who sealed the victory in injury time, when the visitors committed men forward, allowing Lazio’s number 10 to cap off a devastating counter-attack and find the bottom corner for 2-0.

With a first win in three league games, Lazio rose up the table into sixth.
