Paris Saint-Germain claimed a fifth successive Ligue 1 title for the first time in the club’s history after grinding out a 2-0 win over nearest challengers Lens at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

The hosts were outraged when this top-two clash was originally postponed, allowing PSG more time to prepare for their UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final second leg against Liverpool.

There would have been considerably more jeopardy riding on the clash had it taken place on its original date on April 11th, as Luis Enrique’s side arrived in northern France knowing a point would secure the title. Perhaps buoyed by that perceived injustice, the hosts began brightly here.

After an early opportunity for Dro Fernández, Lens were the ones who looked more likely to break the deadlock with chances for Ismaelo Ganiou and Odsonne Edouard.

Matvey Safonov then made a fine save to deny Wesley Saïd, before Illia Zabarnyi cleared Adrien Thomasson's follow-up header off the line.

However, that optimism quickly dissipated when Ousmane Dembele intercepted Malang Sarr and played in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to fire PSG in front with a clinical right-footed strike past Robin Risser

Undeterred, Pierre Sage’s side pressed forward in pursuit of an equaliser, with Safonov brilliantly denying parrying over Saïd’s close-range strike seconds before the break.

Les Sang et Or continued to apply the pressure after the restart, with Safanov called into action yet again to parry away Sima’s effort. The Russian was proving to be a formidable last line of defence for the Parisians, as Sima spurned another opportunity when his shot rebounded off the goalkeeper’s chest before rebounding to safety.

It looked like being one of those nights to forget for Sage’s side, with Samson Baidoo forced off due to an apparent hamstring injury.

The wave upon wave of Lens pressure continued, with substitute Allan Saint-Maximin twice trying his luck in a bid to restore parity.

Meanwhile, Sima’s unrelenting quest to add his name to the scoresheet continued when his shot cannoned off the post after latching onto Florian Thauvin’s through ball. Thauvin did manage to beat Safanov with a very tidy finish heading into the closing stages, but was ruled out for offside.

Ultimately, PSG showed their ruthlessness to punish Lens for the profligacy when Ibrahim Mbaye unleashed a ferocious strike beyond Risser in stoppage time, as PSG celebrated securing a 14th top-flight crown.

It was hardly the most convincing display from Luis Enrique’s side, but another trophy had been safely locked away in the cabinet, leaving the prospect of consecutive UCL and Ligue 1 doubles looming large.

Les Sang et Or can still create history themselves, though, in what has been a fine campaign. After ending their season away at Lyon, the focus will be on winning the Coupe de France for the first time when they face Nice on May 22nd.
