NHL roundup: MacKinnon scores in OT, Panthers rally twice in thrilling win over Columbus

The NHL's 12-game slate on Saturday, December 6th, provided a ton of exciting moments, including shutouts, overtime thrills, and insane rallies!

Panthers 7-6 Blue Jackets

The Panthers completed one of the biggest rallies of the year on Saturday. Columbus got out to a 4-1 lead before the Panthers proceeded to score six of the game's next eight goals. 

They tied it up 4-4 in the second period, courtesy of two goals from Carter Verhaeghe (7), second on a power play, then another power play goal from Seth Jones (4).

The Blue Jackets would retaliate with a pair of goals from Cole Sillinger (3) and Isac Lundestrom (1) to go up 6-4. But Brad Marchand (16) got another rally started to make it 6-5 before Anton Lundell (7) sent home the game-tying goal with just over five minutes left in regulation.

Then Florida's Sam Bennett (7) scored the OT game-winner with just 3.2 seconds left, sending the Florida faithful into an uproar.

Avalanche 3-2 Rangers

After a scoreless first period, the Avs got on the board first thanks to Parker Kelly's sixth goal of the season. 

Conor Sheary would score his first goal of the season to tie it up 1-1 for the Rangers until Nathan MacKinnon (23) would give Colorado a 2-1 lead. 

Artemi Panarin (10) would respond tie it up 2-2 for the Rangers with 42 seconds left in regulation, sending it into overtime. 

That's where MacKinnon (24) did MacKinnon things and scored the game-winner. 

Teammate Martin Necas (24) assisted on all three goals for the Avalanche as they improved to an NHL-best 20-2-6. 

The Rangers fell to 15-12-3.

Islanders 2-0 Lightning

Calum Ritchie (3) scored the Islanders' only even-strength goal of the game before teammate Casey Cizikas (3) hit the empty-netter to complete the 2-0 shutout.

Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin earned his third shutout of the season and the 25th of his career after making 31 saves. 

Despite being outshot 32-19, the Islanders extended their winning streak to three games and improved to 16-10-3. 

Tampa Bay fell to 16-10-2 as they've now dropped three straight.

Bruins 4-1 Devils

Boston held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period thanks to goals from Fraser Minten (4) and Morgan Geekie (22), despite being outshot 20-9 at the time. 

Timo Meier (11) scored his third goal in the past five games for the Devils. 

The Bruins would add some insurance in the third period with goals from Casey Mittelstadt (6) and Andrew Peeke (1) as they improved to 17-13-0.

New Jersey has now lost five straight as they fell to 16-12-1

Flames 2-0 Mammoth

Calgary's Yegor Sharangovich (4) scored just 16 seconds into the game to give his Flames the 1-0 lead. Then teammate Connor Zary (4) scored the empty-netter with just over two minutes left in the game - with nothing else in between. 

Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play, while Calgary goaltender Dustin Wolf picked up his second shutout of the season and the fifth of his career after making 28 saves. 

Calgary improved to 11-15-4, while the Mammoth fell to 14-13-3. 

Hurricanes 6-3 Predators

Carolina opened up the game with three goals in the first period, then two more in the second to get out to a commanding 5-0 lead that Nashville could not come back from.

Michael Bunting (7), Matthew Wood (8), and then Filip Forsberg (10) tried to rally Nashville with three goals in the third, but it was just too big a hole to climb out of. 

Jackson Blake (8) led the Canes in points with two goals and one assist as the Canes improved to 17-8-2. 

Nashville, after winning back-to-back games, fell to 10-4-4, being outshot 41-24.

Blues 2-1 Senators

After scoring his first of the game in the second period, Jake Neighbours (8) scored his second of the game for St. Louis just 12 seconds into the third period to put them up 2-0 - that's all that was needed. 

Ottawa's Fabian Zetterlund (6) tried to rally his team with a goal late in the third, but Blues goaltender Joel Hofer was a brick wall as he recorded a career-high 40 saves. 

St. Louis improved to 10-12-7, Ottawa fell to 13-11-4. 

Canadiens 2-1 Maple Leafs

Cole Caufield extended his point streak to 10 games after scoring his 15th goal of the season to put the Habs up 1-0 in the second. 

Toronto's Scott Laughton (3) scored a short-handed goal in the third period to tie it all up 1-1 with just nine minutes left in regulation. 

After a no-goal show in overtime, Caufield and teammate Alexandre Texier scored the two needed during the shootout to earn the win as the team improved to 15-9-3.

Toronto's three-game win streak came to an end as they fell to 13-12-3. 

Kings 6-0 Blackhawks

Brandt Clarke (5) had his first multi-goal win during the Kings' shutout over the Blackhawks. 

Things took off in the second period for the Kings with a goal by Warren Foegele (5). From then on, they couldn't stop.

Other goals were scored by Andrei Kuzmenko (4), Mikey Anderson (2), and Alex Turcotte (2).

Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper recorded his second shutout of the season and the 38th of his career as they improved to 13-8-7.

Chicago, who beat the Kings two days ago on December 4th, fell to 12-10-6 on the season.

Oilers 6-2 Jets

The Oilers got out to a fiery start in the first period with four straight goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (7), Leon Draisaitl (17), Matt Savoie (6), and Evan Bouchard (5). 

Curtis Lazar (2) added some extra insurance with the game's lone goal in the second period as the Oilers were outshooting the Jets 21-9 entering the third period. 

Gabriel Vilardi (13) put one up for the Jets at the start of the third period, but it was followed up by another Oilers goal thanks to David Tomasek (3).

His Jets teammate Cole Koepke (2) put up the second for Winnipeg, but it wasn't enough as they fell to 14-13-1.

Edmonton improved to 13-11-5 as they've now won back-to-back games.

Canucks 4-2 Wild 

Matt Boldy (16) put the Wild up 1-0 in the first period, only to be followed by three straight goals from Vancouver in the second. 

Tom Willander and Elias Pettersson scored their first goals of the season two minutes apart before Aatu Raty (2) followed up with a goal of his own as they went into the third up 3-1.

Raty would score his second of the game and third of the season to put the game out of reach, despite a late power play goal from Mats Zuccarello (2), as the Canucks improved to 11-15-3. 

Minnesota has now dropped back-to-back games as they fell to 15-9-5.

Red Wings 4-3 Kraken 

Both teams exchanged one goal each in the first period before Detroit's Andrew Copp (2) gave them the 2-1 lead, which lasted a whole 1:34. 

Goals from Adam Larsson (2) and Chandler Stephenson (5) gave the Kraken a 3-2 lead. The Red Wings wouldn't go away, though, as James van Riemsdyk (6) made sure to tie it up 3-3 heading into the third period. 

The veteran Patrick Kane (5) proved clutch as he gave his Red Wings the 4-3 lead with just under three minutes in regulation to seal the win.

Detroit improved to 15-11-3, while Seattle fell to 11-9-6, having lost four straight.
