Michael Valgren stormed to a sensational victory on stage 5 of Tirreno-Adriatico when he his final breakaway companion, Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling) on the last climb to solo to victory in his first WorldTour win for eight years.

“It’s unbelievable,” Valgren said after celebrating with his teammates at the finish line. “We all worked so hard for this. I had a really good winter at home with all my family, and they supported the team, and I supported them. We just had a baby one month ago, so it’s for them, it’s for the team. For me, I’m speechless.”

Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) took second spot, with Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) finishing third. Race leader, Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), finished 19 seconds behind Del Toro, and as a consequence was forced to hand over the blue jersey. He is now 23 seconds behind the Mexican overall.

It has been a struggle to return to the prime of the WorldTour for the charismatic Danes after he crashed heavily at the Route d’Occitanie, where he sustained a list of horrendous injuries, including a fractured pelvis, dislocated hip, damage to his ACL and MCL ligaments in his knee, as well as a shattered meniscus.
