Recently at Flashscore, we unveiled a new feature allowing you to follow your favourite football players, just like you follow teams or matches. You won't believe some of the data it revealed about which players are the most popular in the world!

Just as you can 'star' teams and matches in the Flashscore app, you can follow players by favouriting them - find out how the new feature works here.

Now that this exciting new feature is up and running, we took a look at the data from September 2025 to see who the most popular players in the world are, based on who you chose to follow.

Ronaldo leads the way globally

It was no huge surprise to see Cristiano Ronaldo as the most followed player in the Flashscore app globally in September, and he was selected way more than the next man, but guess what: Lionel Messi wasn't second!

That's right, the little Argentine maestro ranked behind Ronaldo and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, who was followed slightly more last month than Inter Miami's talisman.

Rounding out the top four most followed players globally was Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, who is now an undisputed world star.

Top four in a league of their own

Those top four players were truly in a league of their own. The fifth most followed player, Raphinha, was chosen about half as much as his Barca teammate Lamine Yamal by Flashscore users.

Closely behind Raphinha in the stats were: Erling Haaland, Pedri, Robert Lewandowski and Vinicius Junior. Closing out the top 10 was Liverpool's latest record-breaking signing, Alexander Isak.

As you can see, Barcelona players dominate that top 10, accounting for 40 per cent of the most followed players. What's more, Marcus Rashford also featured in the top 20.

Barcelona and Real Madrid dominate top 20

Suppose we are looking at which club featured in the top 20 players most often. In that case, it was actually Real Madrid, with six players - Mbappe, Vinicius, Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo and Franco Mastantuono.

Combined, the two LaLiga giants contributed 11 of the top 20 players, quite incredibly. That's over half!

Also present in the top 20 were superstars Neymar, Mohamed Salah, and Harry Kane, as was recent Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele.

Interestingly, not a single player from Italy's Serie A featured in the global top 20 followed stars.

CR7 the king, but not everywhere

We've shared the most interesting global data, but what about our local markets?

Looking at the individual country data, our new feature was utilised most heavily in France, Brazil and Poland.

In France, it was not a surprise that Mbappe led the way, followed by Ronaldo, Lamine Yamal, and then Messi.

In Brazil, likewise, it wasn't a shock to see Neymar ranked second behind Ronaldo and ahead of Messi. However, the fourth name on their list was more intriguing - Flamengo's Uruguayan captain Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

No prizes for guessing the most popular player in Poland, though. That's right, it was Robert Lewandowski, miles ahead of anyone else. Five Polish internationals made the top 10 in that country, including English-born Matty Cash.

Ronaldo was the most followed player in Portugal, obviously, and also in the UK, Italy, Romania and Mexico.

Countries where the Al Nassr star didn't lead the way, however, included Spain, Slovakia, Hungary, Georgia, and the Czech Republic.

Aside from Spain (Mbappe), those mentioned markets preferred local stars over the Portuguese legend.
