After Coco Gauff denied having turned down an invitation from Serena Williams to play together in the tennis legend's much-anticipated return to the WTA tour, Serena explained this Tuesday (16) that she didn't know her compatriot was available.

"I thought Coco was more focused on playing singles," said the former world number 1 to Flashscore right after her defeat in the WTA 500 debut in Berlin.

"I should have done better research on who was playing doubles," she continued. "It would have been fun to play with Coco. Maybe I'll call her next time."

Earlier, Gauff said she would play doubles with Serena anytime: "She just has to ask."

Serena, 44, was defeated in the doubles draw in Berlin this Tuesday, playing alongside the Czech Karolina Muchova.

This was the tennis legend's second match since her return to the courts. Last week, she played the WTA 500 at Queen's alongside Canadian Victoria Mboko.
