Sergio’s León-heart roars Valladolid over the line against Getafe

After 13-straight winless La Liga away games prior, Real Valladolid finally secured a top-flight win on the road, narrowly edging Getafe out of a five-goal thriller to claim a 3-2 victory.

After a winless start to the season, Getafe could ill afford to begin slowly here, but that’s exactly what happened, as the hosts imploded from the get-go and allowed Valladolid to take the lead from the penalty spot, with Sergio León confidently dispatching from 12 yards. This game was a real humdinger of an affair, and in the blink of an eye, Getafe had completely turned the game on its head. Borja Mayoral confidently turned home Mauro Arambarri’s cross to level the scores before Damián Suárez’s sensational strike nosed the hosts ahead for the first time.

The joy was only short lived for Getafe though, who as quickly as they gained the lead, lost it once more as León powered home his second of the afternoon to convert Kike Pérez’s teasing delivery. This game was simply an incredible spectacle and it continued that way after the break too, with Óscar Plano on hand to fire Valladolid into the lead for the second time of the afternoon, with León again involved, this time as the provider, teeing up Plano to stroke home from the edge of the area.

For once, a lull in the game followed the goal, with Valladolid realising perhaps attack isn’t necessarily the best form of defence when you’re defending a lead. The visitors were nearly the architects of their own downfall though, giving Getafe the chance to level the scores from the spot, but Enes Ünal spurned that opportunity. It certainly wasn’t the most convincing performance from Valladolid, but claiming the points is all that matters to lift them out of the drop zone for Saturday night at least.
