Juventus leapfrogged Bologna up to fifth in the Serie A (SA) table after a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, extending the Old Lady’s impressive recent form to five wins in six matches across all competitions.

Having made their second-best start to a Serie A season in the three-points-for-a-win era, Bologna looked full of confidence in the early stages, as Riccardo Orsolini saw a golden chance at the back post superbly thwarted by Michele Di Gregorio.

Grateful for that early reprieve, the visitors grew into the contest as the first half progressed, with Weston McKennie glancing a close-range header wastefully wide of the target.

Jonathan David thought he’d given Juventus the lead shortly after the half-hour mark, only for the Canadian’s strike to be disallowed for an offside against McKennie in the build-up.

Chances continued to flow with half-time approaching, as Andrea Cambiasso failed to convert at the back post for the Old Lady, while at the other end, Nadir Zortea fired an angled effort agonisingly against the crossbar.

After a closely-fought start to the second period, Luciano Spalletti made a double change on the hour mark, introducing Lois Openda and Juan Cabal.

It was the latter who made an immediate impact for the visitors, heading home from Kenan Yildiz’s delivery to score his second Serie A goal of the season.

Things went from bad to worse for Bologna shortly after, when Torbjorn Heggem was shown a straight red card for bringing down Openda as the last man.

Armed with the numerical advantage, Juventus looked to press home their advantage in the closing stages, as Openda saw a sharp low strike saved by Federico Ravaglia. The visitors’ one-goal cushion proved to be enough, though, as despite Bologna’s best efforts, they succumbed to back-to-back Serie A home defeats for the first time since January 2022.
