Former world champion Luca Brecel staged a remarkable comeback to beat Ryan Day 10-7 and book his place in the last 16 of the World Championship at the Crucible in Sheffield on Thursday.

Brecel, who won the title in 2023, fought back from 5-1 down to move one frame away at 5-4 on Wednesday before Day stormed into a 6-4 lead with a 101 break.

The Belgian took six of the next seven frames to stun the Welshman, ranked 36 in the world, who accidentally potted the cue ball in the 16th frame.

Brecel will face world number 10 Ding Junhui in the last 16 which is scheduled over three days.

The best of 25-frame match will get underway Saturday evening with the second session on Sunday. The final session will be played on Monday.

The 38-year-old Ding beat England’s Zak Surety 10-7 earlier in the week to book his place in the next round.
