Schalke 04 on Saturday night gained promotion for the German Bundesliga after a three-year absence when they recorded a 1-0 at home in the Veltins Arena against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Schalke secured their return to the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday night, to end their three-season stay in the second tier.

Saturday’s win against Fortuna extended their unbeaten league run to 12 games, lifting them 10 points clear of third-placed Hannover.

Schalke's home form has been outstanding during their campaign and has played a huge role in their promotion to the German Bundesliga.

Schalke have only suffered one defeat at home this campaign against Holstein Kiel back in September, and should they avoid defeat in their final game at the Veltins Arena against Braunschweig, they will have registered their best home record in 20 years.

Kenan Karaman's 15th-minute goal, his 15th in the league this season, put the seven-time German champions Schalke on track to return after three seasons in the 2. Bundesliga.

Schalke are set to be crowned second division champions if second-placed Paderborn don't win at Elversberg on Sunday.
