Former A-League Championship winning Newcastle Jets boss Gary van Egmond has been appointed as interim manager at the Western Sydney Wanderers after Alen Stajcic was let go on Tuesday.

Stajcic was sacked after a run of poor results that left Western Sydney Wanderers on the bottom of the standings, with club management reportedly growing tired of the excuses and assessments offered by the 52-year-old.

The poor on-field results have had a significant flow-on effect financially for the club with Western Sydney fans turning away in droves as their constant struggles to score grew weary.

Following a league-low ten goals scored in 13 rounds so far this season, a crowd of only 5,243 spectators turned up to their Saturday evening 2-1 loss at home to Newcastle Jets

Ultimately, Stajcic and his colleagues were unable to fill the voi left by the departures of Nicolas Milanovic and Zachary Sapsford, who contributed 20 of their 58 goals scored during the 2024/25 regular season.

In a desperate sign of their difficulties inspiring and drawing in a base, that figure was their third-lowest attendance of the season following even lower crowds of 5,029 (v Auckland FC) and 4,652 (v Brisbane Roar) earlier in the season.

Club management will be hoping to find someone who can develop the kind of entertaining football that once saw packed stands and a raucous Red and Black Bloc drive the Wanderers to A-League and Asian Champions League glory in years gone by.

In the mean time, assistant coach Gary van Egmond has been appointed to correct the course.

60-year-old van Egmond has worked on various roles in Australia and China, including as a Wanderers assistant coach and head coach of the Newcastle Jets women's team.

He led the Jets men's side to their first A-League Championship in 2007/08.
