The Algerian Football Federation has officially confirmed they have submitted a formal complaint regarding the refereeing decision during their quarter-final fixture of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Nigeria in Morocco last Saturday.

During the fixture played at Stade de Marrakech, the Super Eagles prevailed with efforts in either half through Victor Osimhen, who scored his fourth goal of the competition, and Akor Adams to triumph 2-0, and reach the semi-finals.

Osimhen grabbed the opener in the 47th minute after he rose highest to thunder home a powerful header, before the Galatasaray forward turned the provider, setting up Adams, who made no mistake to double the scoreline.

However, through their official social media handles labelled Équipe d’Algérie de football, the Algerian FA while congratulating the Fennecs for their campaign in Morocco, confirmed they had written to both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) over refereeing decisions in the game.

Their statement came a few hours after the African body confirmed they had opened an investigation and warned of possible disciplinary action after “potentially unacceptable behaviour” as players clashed on the pitch at the end of the AFCON quarter-final between Algeria and Nigeria.

‘Officiating does not reflect African image’

“The Algerian Football Federation cannot ignore the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and left widespread outrage, which has been blamed for the credibility of the African referee, and it does not serve the image of African football internationally,” read part of the statement.

“Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations.”

The federation further called on Algerians at large to stay behind the team despite their exit from the 2025 edition. Algeria won all their group matches, beating Sudan 3-0 in the opener, edging out Burkina Faso 1-0, before beating Equatorial Guinea 3-1.

In the Round of 16, Algeria came up against DR Congo, a side they defeated 1-0 to reach the last eight, where they lost against the Super Eagles.

“Following the elimination of the national team in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, the Algerian Football Federation would like to send this message to the supporters of the national team,” added the statement.

“With the confirmation of the result of the match, the Algerian Football Federation calls on all Algerian supporters to embrace the spirit of solidarity and to surround the national team, which is going through a reconstruction phase, and continues the path of work and development.

“Important merit is approaching in less than five months, ahead of the World Cup final, which requires collective cohesion, calmness, and support from everyone.”

The statement continued: “The players and technical staff members have shown commitment and seriousness throughout the competition, which deserves appreciation and encouragement by the entire national football family.

“During this period, the necessary lessons must be taken from this participation, in order to enhance the work accomplished and prepare for future qualifications, in order to return with a stronger and more competitive performance.”

The federation further vowed to do everything within their means to have the national team remain a strong force in Africa.

“The Algerian Football Federation will continue its efforts steadily and decisively, harnessing all the necessary human, technical and organisational capabilities, so that the national team remains among the best teams, and a source of pride, joy and esteem for the Algerian youth,” said the statement.

“The Algerian Football Federation extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to all supporters, as well as the media that accompanied the national team throughout this continental adventure, and thanks the public authorities for their support and providing the necessary resources for the benefit of the national team.”

The statement concluded: “In the end, the Algerian Football Federation renews its full confidence in the group, the technical staff, and all the observers on the development of national football.”

Any disciplinary action could have an impact on the Super Eagles as they prepare for their semi-final showdown on Wednesday against Morocco.
