He has lost just four of those fixtures on the field of play, and none of the last 20 competitive matches since a 2-0 defeat to Mali at the start of their Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast in 2024.
The caveat is the 2-0 win over Lesotho in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers that was decided in South Africa’s favour on the pitch but later reversed to a 3-0 defeat in the boardroom over the Teboho Mokoena affair.
However, as we are strictly considering what happens during the 90 or 120 minutes, that result is kept intact. Similarly, the semi-final loss to Nigeria on penalties at the last Africa Cup of Nations is recorded as a 1-1 draw, as per FIFA’s official records.
Broos has won 18 of those 33 games (55%), with 11 draws (33%) and four defeats (12%).
The losses came against Ghana (0-1) in the final match of the 2022 World Cup qualifying group in Cape Coast, when Bafana conceded a controversial penalty, and a 2-1 defeat away to Morocco at the start of qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
They also lost 2-0 to Rwanda on a difficult artificial surface in one of their early 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and 2-0 to Mali in their opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in January 2024.
There have been some notable victories, including beating Morocco twice – most significantly in the Round of 16 at the last Africa Cup of Nations – a home win over Ghana at Soccer City, a crucial 2-0 away victory against Benin in a World Cup qualifier played in Abidjan, and a 5-0 home success over Congo, their second-biggest victory ever.
Broos has yet to overcome Nigeria, with three meetings under his tenure all ending 1-1.
The team continues to improve under his guidance: in their last 10 competitive matches they have kept eight clean sheets, conceded just two goals and scored 22. Only Congo and Nigeria have breached their defence in that period.
Across the 33 matches, Bafana have scored 53 goals and conceded 22.
Lyle Foster and Teboho Mokoena lead the scoring charts under Broos in competitive matches with seven goals each, followed by Oswin Appollis on four and Evidence Makgopa on three.
