Nigeria’s hopes of winning a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title suffered a setback with injuries to Cyriel Dessers and Ryan Alebiosu.

Making his Super Eagles debut against Uganda, Blackburn Rovers defender Alebiosu impressed, playing the full 90 minutes in place of Bright Osayi-Samuel as Nigeria secured a 3-1 win over the Cranes.

However, despite his strong performance, he suffered a leg cut and was taken to hospital. His availability for the rest of the tournament is now uncertain as Eric Chelle’s men prepare to face Mozambique in the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, Panathinaikos star Dessers is also a major doubt, nursing a thigh injury. He is scheduled to undergo a scan to determine the severity and whether he can continue in the tournament.

"It’s difficult to play. This is his first game in Africa, in AFCON. I am happy with what he did, but I’m a little worried because he has an injury," said Chelle.

"When they scored the goal, he had a big... I don’t know the word in English, but he went to the hospital. His leg is open.

"I’m happy about how he played today, and I have a lot of choices right now."

A win for the three-time African champions over the Mambas on January 5th in Fez would set up a quarter-final clash against either Algeria or D.R. Congo.
