After Mamelodi Sundowns returned to Betway Premiership action on Monday with a routine 2-0 win over Orbit College that took them top of the league, the action continues on Tuesday and Wednesday with more matches.

That includes a home match for Kaizer Chiefs against Lamontville Golden Arrows, and a first match in charge of Stellenbosch FC for new coach Gavin Hunt at Sekhukhune United

Chiefs still in it

Far-fetched as it may seem, Kaizer Chiefs are still in the title race. They trail Sundowns by five points but have a game in hand, so would need a very strong second half of the campaign.

That starts at home to Lamontville Golden Arrows on Tuesday, a team that could not wait for the international break after a dismal run of form in November and December saw them lose all three league games and exit the Carling Knockout. Golden Arrows lie 10th.

Chiefs won 1-0 away when the teams met in August, and none of the last 10 clashes between them have ended in a draw. The AmaKhosi have four wins in that time to Golden Arrows’ six. Abafana Bes’thende won at Chiefs in last season’s fixture, claiming a 1-0 victory almost exactly a year ago.

Back on the Hunt

Gavin Hunt begins life as Stellenbosch FC coach away at Sekhukhune United on Tuesday, desperate to get his side up the table. Sekhukhune, with Eric Tinkler at the helm, lie third, four points behind Sundowns but with a game in hand.

Stellenbosch are third bottom with only 12 points from 14 games but are a better team than that. Steve Barker ended his nine-year stay with the club to move to Simba SC in Tanzania. Stellies have made several signings, including striker Tshegofatso Mabasa on loan from Orlando Pirates.

Hunt is back in the big time after leaving Durban City last month following differences over the direction of the club. He left them in a handy seventh place on the table. Draws have largely dominated this fixture down the years.

In 11 games there have been two wins each and seven stalemates. Stellies beat Sekhukhune 3-1 on aggregate (2-0 & 1-1) in the MTN8 semi-finals this season.

Galaxy battle Gallants

TS Galaxy and Marumo Gallants also return to action with a clash in Mbombela on Wednesday. Galaxy sit in eighth place and Gallants in 12th, the latter undone by too many draws (six). No side has been involved in more in the league this season.

Galaxy are strong at home with four wins from six (D1 L1), while Gallants have a single win in eight on the road (D2 L5). All that being said, Gallants have been by far the better side in this fixture and lead the head-to-head 6-1 with five draws from their 12 past meetings.

That includes a 2-1 away win the last time they met in March 2025. Galaxy’s only win between the sides was back in the second tier in 2019, when Gallants were campaigning as TTM and they won 3-1 at home.

These two sides have also been drawn togetehr in the Last 32 of the Nedbank Cup, so this will be a dress rehearsal for that clash.
