There is a full round of Betway Premiership action on Monday and Tuesday, with key clashes at the top and bottom of the table as we head towards the business end of the season.

Nothing will be decided in this round, but the picture could become clearer at both ends. Here are the talking points ahead of the games.

Chiefs aim for hat-trick

Kaizer Chiefs will hope to make it a hat-trick of Betway Premiership wins to reignite their push for third place when they travel to second-bottom Orbit College on Monday.

AmaKhosi’s league form has been wild. They went nine games unbeaten (W4 D5) before three defeats in a row ended their title hopes. They are now looking to make it three wins in a row again.

They trail AmaZulu by one point in the race for third place and CAF Confederation Cup football next season, but have two games in hand. They could leapfrog Usuthu on Monday with a draw, given their superior goal difference.

Orbit College currently sit second bottom in the relegation play-off position, but only on goal difference. In fact, they could climb to 13th with victory.

The only other meeting between these sides ended in a 4-1 victory for Chiefs in November, their biggest top-flight win since they beat AmaZulu 3-0 in August 2023, and the only league game in which they have scored four goals since 2021.

Chasing third place

AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United have the same ambitions as Chiefs as they meet in Durban on Monday.

Poor recent form, with no wins in five (D3 L2), has seen Sekhukhune drop off in the race for third, but if results go their way they could end up back there by the end of the day.

Usuthu are also chasing a third league win in succession after going through a sticky patch, as their season under former Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane mirrors that of AmaKhosi.

Sekhukhune have taken a single point from the last nine available away from home, while AmaZulu ended a three-game winless run at home with a 2-1 success against Richards Bay last time out.

In four previous meetings in Durban, Usuthu have two wins to go with a draw and a single Sekhukhune victory. The reverse fixture this season ended 1-1.

Seeking top spot

Orlando Pirates end a rare 16-day hiatus as they host tricky Lamontville Golden Arrows in Soweto on Tuesday.

Their last outing was the 6-0 victory over TS Galaxy that took them to the top of the Betway Premiership, but since then Mamelodi Sundowns have regained pole position.

Both clubs have played 22 games, but Sundowns, with a goal difference of +29, have 53 points compared to 51 and a goal difference of +31 for The Buccaneers.

Abafana Bes’thende can blow very hot and cold, so just what opposition Pirates will face remains to be seen. It could be a walk in the park or a difficult evening.

Having said that, Pirates have won the last seven meetings between the sides and have not lost to Golden Arrows since 2021. They have not lost at home to the Durban side since 2015.

Since the end of January, Pirates have played nine league games and won seven of them, but a crucial home loss to Sundowns and two points dropped against Siwelele in Orlando were major disappointments.

Golden Arrows have taken seven points from the last nine available.

Tricky away day

Mamelodi Sundowns take their nine-game winning run in the league to Durban City on Tuesday, with City celebrating having booked a place in the Nedbank Cup final.

This will be no easy away day for Sundowns, with City stubborn at the back and beaten only twice at home in the league this season, by Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns also have their looming CAF Champions League semi-final, with the second leg away to Esperance on Sunday, and as much as coach Miguel Cardoso says they are taking it a game at a time, that must be on the minds of everyone concerned.

Winning a ninth successive league title is important, but winning the Champions League is paramount and could be the difference in whether Cardoso is at the club next season or not.

Sundowns have lost only once in the league this season, which was in Durban when they went down 1-0 to Golden Arrows. They have also been held to four draws in 11 away games this campaign.

Durban City have the best home record this campaign behind Sundowns and Pirates, with seven wins in 11 fixtures.

Sundowns won 3-1 when the teams met in Pretoria in September.

Basement battle

There is a relegation six-pointer at the bottom of the table on Tuesday when Magesi FC host Marumo Gallants in Seshego.

Magesi prop up the division with a paltry 14 points from 21 games, while Gallants are third bottom with 18 points.

But if Magesi can get a win, they will move to within a point of their rivals with a fixture in hand, and then it is game on again.

Gallants have won one and lost nine of their previous 10 games in all competitions, but this will be the first game in charge for new coach Jamil Benouahi, the latest man to try his luck at the troubled club.

Magesi are winless in 13 matches (D6 L7) and are now in do-or-die territory. Their last victory was at home to TS Galaxy in October.

The clubs have met six times before, with Magesi leading the head-to-head 2-1, alongside three draws.
