Motaung Jnr not drawn on Kaizer Chiefs' reported interest in coaches Mosimane, McCarthy

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr would not be drawn on the coaching situation at the club saying he cannot comment while he has incumbents in the position.

Chiefs have been linked with Pitso Mosimane and current Kenya national team coach Benni McCarthy in recent times and while Motaung Jnr did not deny the club would be interested in their services at the end of the season, he said it “wouldn’t be right” to comment on the situation.

Chiefs currently have co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef in place but after a promising start to the season, their campaign has been derailed in recent weeks after they slipped out of contention for the Betway Premiership, and were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup and Nedbank Cup.

Motaung Jnr recently said the minimum requirement for the remainder of the campaign is a CAF Champions League place, which would mean a top two finish, something that seems exceedingly unlikely.

That will likely mean the exit of the current coaches and as Chiefs go in search of a new mentor, but Motaung insists it is premature to have that conversation.

“You are mentioning two top individuals (Mosimane and McCarthy), who have achieved tremendous things in their careers,” he told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“It would be unfair of me to sit here and talk about coaches, when we have coaches in the team. We have our immediate mandate and responsibility to restore the pride and the hurt that’s been happened to the nation and to the team.

“I can sit here and talk about individuals, it is not professional and I don’t think it’s the right thing to do.

“I have a lot of respect for both of those gentlemen, they have achieved a lot through their playing days, achieved as coaches and it’s always an honour to be associated with people like that.

“To be fully transparent and honest, it wouldn’t be right for me to sit here and talk about them.”

Motaung was also quoted in iDiskiTimes as saying that results needed to "come quickly", piling the pressure on the current co-coaches

“As a club, we’re constantly evaluating ourselves, our processes and there’s a ton of work that has been done behind the scenes, which is one thing people must know," he said.

“It’s not just about coaches, it’s not just about players, it’s about our whole footballing structure – you can’t look at certain things in insolation, the club is making sure we put ourselves in the best position to finish as strong as we can this year.

“We know we want to be in the CAF Champions League next year; we have certain targets we set for ourselves, evaluating where we are now, what needs to be done to get there and trust me, there’s a lot of work being done right now as we speak.

“I understand the frustrations and people want answers, and it’s about results, we need results and they must come quickly.”
