Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has praised his players following their comprehensive Soweto Derby win over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, saying it took more than tactics to secure the victory.

The win moves Pirates back to the top of the Betway Premiership, at least until Mamelodi Sundowns host Sekhukhune United on Sunday, and was their biggest league triumph over Chiefs in 25 years.

Goals from Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa sealed the victory at a sold-out Soccer City.

“We made a game plan,” Ouaddou said, “but today, it was more than tactics, more than technique. In this game you have to play with heart. You have to play with spirit.

“And today, that's what the players did, and I hope they will continue to do so until the end of the season.”

Pirates had lost their previous league match to Mamelodi Sundowns and were also knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by second-tier club Casric Stars in their last two fixtures.

But on Saturday they were vastly superior to Chiefs and romped to an emphatic win, prompting the question of what changes Ouaddou had made in the days before the derby to get his team back up to speed.

“The fighting spirit of our team has been there for a while, since the beginning of the season. And the aim to play quality football as well is still there,” he answered.

“What changed today is the efficiency in the area of truth. It means that in the finishing, we were spot on. I have to give credit to our boys.

“I’m really happy. I'm proud of my boys today. That is the kind of performance that I'm expecting from them, high level and playing with high ambition,” the Pirates coach said.

“We wanted to score early, and they did it. We played against a very good team, but the fact that we scored early put them under pressure in the first half and helped us to develop our game.

“I can say that for me, it's really a reference game. We have to build on that until the end of the season,” Ouaddou added.

Pirates are next in action on Wednesday away at Polokwane City in the league.
